I've been digesting heavily on the concept of culture and how a "cultural space" could be formed, and in a less 'natural' way how this can be influenced or directly created by others taking into consideration things like pop culture and the influences of mass media on said culture.
Maybe its a good idea to just put out the definition of pop culture here: Popular culture (commonly known as pop culture) is the totality of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes,[1] images and other phenomena that are deemed preferred per an informal consensus within the mainstream of a given culture, especially Western culture of the early to mid 20th century and the emerging global mainstream of the late 20th and early 21st century. Heavily influenced by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society.
(Yes that was from wikipedia.)
How much of our 'American' culture is designed and implemented by media/corporate entities? No specific answer as of yet, but its something worth thinking about.
All of these are beautiful. I'm glad to see some of Anna's show. Looks soo good. :)
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I'm home and realized immediately I brought the wrong hard drive for print swapping. Maybe over spring break if I come home. If not...maybe summer. I get out early and am hoping to make it up for end of semester.
ALSO
You should look at peter brown's stuff. Some of it makes me home sick when I'm away. It's all such familiar territory. I'm feeling angry I haven't taken any real shots sense I've been home...

ReplyDeleteEither way we will have to get the print swap done! How long is your break for?
Thanks for the link - looks good.
You may have seen these people before (mostly because Diana sent me their way) but have you looked at Alec Soth, Esko Manniko, and Mitch Epstein?
